JSerra sophomore Harrison Steed, coming off an injured right groin muscle that kept him out most of April, used the Trinity League finals to show he is healthy heading into CIF competition.

Steed set a league meet record by clearing 6 feet, 10 inches to capture the high jump title at the league track and field finals Friday at Santa Margarita High.

“The last week I have training real hard, and I feel no pain,” said Steed, who is tied for the state lead for best high jump (7 feet).

“Winning here is a motivator to go on and try to win the state title.”

For a couple of tantalizing seconds, it appeared as though Steed had recaptured the state lead in the high jump after he cleared 7 feet, 1/4 inch on his last attempt of the competition. However, the bar fell seconds after he cleared the height, disallowing the jump.

In the best finish of the day, Santa Margarita junior Gus Berga (49.15) rallied over the over the last 100 meters to edge Servite senior Trent Perez (49.15) in the 400 final.

“It's great to win here at home,” he said.

Servite junior Brendon Confer took control of the boys 1,600 during the second lap and finished strong, winning in a meet-record time of 4:20.41.

“I feel really strong for this point of the season,” he said.

The Friars (148 points) edged the Lancers (141.50) to win the team title.

On the girls side, it was an impressive day for Santa Margarita senior Kelly Collins. Collins, who has been battling a hamstring injury throughout the season, captured both hurdles titles, winning the 100 (14.80) and 300 (44.78). She was second in the 100.

“Coming off the injury, it feels good to be doing as well as I did today,” she said.

Freshman Katherine Delaney also put forth a wonderful effort, capturing both the 800 (2:16.90) and the 1,600 (4:57.22).

Spurred on by the title-winning efforts of freshman Kaelynn Greene (200), Taylor Williams (3,200), and Annie Giebelhaus (high jump), Orange Lutheran (124) edged the Eagles (121) for the team title.

At the Century League finals: Canyon senior Muzae Sesay won hurdles titles in both the 110 (14.40) and the 300 (39.55), while junior Tubotein Taylor won the 400 (50.25) leading the Comanches to the boys title.

Seniors Ashley Pyka (120 feet, 11 inches) and Jacquii DiMarzio (15.91) won titles in the discus and 100 hurdles respectively, as Canyon also won the girls title.
