Dana Hills on the way to joining elite

Track notes: Dolphins have developed sprint and field weapons.

OCVarsity.com

Entering the track and field season, optimism was high for the Dana Hills track and field program, as it looked to continue building toward becoming one of the county's elite programs.

That notion was reinforced last Thursday when the boys (78-58) and girls (95-41) produced emphatic dual meet victories over their South Coast rival and perennial county powerhouse Mission Viejo.

Known primarily for their distance-running program, the Dolphins displayed a balanced attack, as seniors Kellen Foley and Mike La Rocca picked up key points in the sprints and field events.

The Dolphin attack has also been fortified by the addition of freshman Jordan Singleton, who has twice set the school record in the triple jump this year, the latest coming against the Diablos, in which he jumped 45-7 1/2.

Despite the big victory, Dunne acknowledged that the team knows the Diablos will be looking to bounce back at league finals in May.

“We told the team to enjoy this victory, but that we have to get back to work,” he said. “We know that at league finals, they will come back with twice as much effort.”

It was also a banner day for the girls, who defeated the Mission Viejo for the second consecutive year.

Junior Grace Esslinger posted victories in the 100, 200, and 100 hurdles for the second consecutive week, while sophomore Katherine Gullickson (800), senior Heather Balbier (1,600), freshman Alaina Alvarez (3,200), and sophomore Kimmie Conner (triple jump, high jump) each posted impressive victories.

Coach Ryan Crane said the rivalry and high-spirited competition between the schools brought out the best in his squad.
