TONIGHT'S CIF-SS DIVISION II SOFTBALL FINAL

EL MODENA (25-8-2) VS. GLENDORA (19-9)

At Bill Barber Park, Irvine, 6:30 p.m.

How they got here: El Modena def. Chaffey, 3-2, Temescal Canyon of Lake Elsinore, 4-2, Ayala of Chino Hills, 2-1, and Kennedy, 4-3 (8 innings); Glendora def. San Luis Obispo, 13-0, Etiwanda, 1-0, Vista Murrieta, 3-2, and Pacifica, 3-1.

Outlook: El Modena, the Century League champion, is in the championship game for the first time since making back-to-back appearances in the Division III finals in 2001 and 2002. The Vanguards bring a 10-game unbeaten streak into the title game. Glendora, which shared the Sierra League title with Ayala of Chino Hills, is making its first appearance in the finals. The Tartans have won six consecutive games. Ayala is a common opponent for El Modena and Glendora. The Vanguards beat Ayala twice, 3-1 and 2-1. The Tartans beat Ayala, 4-2, and lost to the Bulldogs, 3-2, in league games. Evansville-bound Kylie Wagner is El Modena's ace in the circle and she is one of the team's top hitters. Cal State Dominguez Hills-bound Emily McEwen gives the Vanguards another big stick. Tartans ace Dana Waldusky is not a big power hitter, but she mixes up her pitches well and keeps teams off balance. She held Pacifica to two hits in the semifinals. Glendora shortstop Natalie Hernandez is a stellar defensive player and she bats in the clean-up spot. Brandi Andrews hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to help Glendora knock off Pacifica, 3-1.
