Pacifica comes up a little bit short in repeat bid

Softball playoffs: Harrison just misses three-run HR as Mariners fall to Glendora, 3-1.

GARDEN GROVE One ball cleared the fence by a couple of feet and another was a foot or two from leaving the yard.

Both drives were significant factors in Glendora's 3-1 victory over Pacifica in a CIF-SS Division III softball semifinal Tuesday at Pacifica High.

Pacifica (22-11) was leading, 1-0, through five innings before a walk and a single in the top of the sixth set the table for Brandi Andrews, who hit a three-run home run that just cleared the fence in right-center field, giving the Tartans (19-9) the lead for good.

Andrews' homer and solid pitching from Glendora's Dana Waldusky thwarted the Mariners' hopes of back-to-back division titles. Waldusky yielded two hits and didn't allow an earned run.

“I feel bad for the seniors,” Pacifica coach Kevin Cody said. “They wanted it and they battled hard and have nothing to be ashamed of.”

In the bottom of the fourth, Jamie Prussic reached first on a fielder's choice, took second on a wild pitch and scored when the Tartans made two errors on a ball hit by Cheyenne Mascarenas — one a fielding error and the other a throwing miscue.

The Mariners stranded Mascarenas at third.

In the fifth, Pacifica had runners on first and second with no outs when Andrea Harrison hit a long fly to left-center. The ball had home run distance but was hauled in by Tartans left fielder Nicole Healy, who was up against the fence and reached over her head to make the catch.

Pacifica wound up stranding both runners and went down in order in the sixth and seventh.
