El Dorado prevails in 10-inning battle

Softball playoffs: Brinnon's double lifts Golden Hawks to 2-1 win in wild-card game.

Faith Brinnon drove in Janie Takeda with a one-out double in the top of the 10th inning, and El Dorado held on to beat Mayfair of Lakewood, 2-1, in a CIF-SS Division II wild-card softball game Wednesday at Mayfair High.

“It took us 10 innings, but we finally pushed it through,” Golden Hawks coach Melissa Chavez said.

Michelle Takeda's RBI single in the top of the sixth gave El Dorado a 1-0 lead, but the Monsoons picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to tie it.

Brinnon went 3 for 5 to lead El Dorado's nine-hit attack.

Senior Casey Suda went the distance, allowing two hits and striking out five to pick up the victory for the Golden Hawks.

El Dorado (12-14) advanced to the first round where it will meet top-seeded Kennedy (26-3) on Friday at 3:15 p.m. at Cypress Arnold Park. Mayfair finished the season with a record of 14-8.

In other Division II wild-card games:

Valencia 6, Long Beach Millikan 4: Melanie Ramos went 2 for 3, drove in a run and scored a run, and freshman Rebekah Sanchez went 1 for 3 with an RBI as the Tigers (16-13) defeated the visiting Rams (12-16).

Brittany Walton scattered six hits to pick up the complete-game victory for Valencia.

Valencia goes on the road for a first-round game at Vista Murrieta, the Southwestern League champion, on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

San Clemente 10, Bellflower 0: Kailey McCasland went 2 for 3 with two homers and four RBIs as the Tritons (14-12) took out the visiting Buccaneers (11-9).

McCasland belted a two-run homer in the third and added another two-run blast in the sixth.

San Clemente also got a big game from Gianna Cipollone, who went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Ryan Crowe and Chelsea Luckey combined on a three-hit shutout for San Clemente.

San Clemente plays at Redlands in the first round Friday at 3:15 p.m.

In a Division III wild-card game:

La Habra 2, Quartz Hill 1: Kayla Klein pitched a complete game, allowing four hits, one walk and striking out 12 to help the Highlanders knock off the visiting Rebels.

Klein and Kate Sutherland delivered the RBIs to lead the La Habra offense.

The Highlanders upped their record to 16-13, while Quartz Hill dropped to 18-7.

La Habra will play at No. 4 seed Beckman in the first round on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

In a Division VI wild-card game:

Eastside Christian 6, Brethren Christian 3: Jordan Rhone went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs to help the Eagles rally to defeat the Warriors at Garden Grove Park.

Rhone had one of the key hits during Eastside Christian's five-run outburst in the top of the seventh for the come-from-behind victory.

Tori Calhoon went 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs for Brethren Christian.

The Eagles (10-4) move on to the first round where they will play at South El Monte. The Warriors finished with a record of 9-6-1.
