Thomas' blast propels Beckman past Laguna Hills
Softball roundup: No. 2 Kennedy, No. 3 Rosary clinch league championships.
Trista Thomas belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning Tuesday to help Beckman snap a six-game losing streak to Laguna Hills with a 3-1 victory in a Pacific Coast League softball game at Laguna Hills High.
It was the first time the Patriots (20-6, 6-1) had beaten the Hawks (19-6, 6-1), and it moved Beckman into a tie for first place with Laguna Hills. The Hawks and Beckman were ranked No. 4 and No. 5 in Division III, respectively, heading into the game.
Beckman plays University on Thursday. Beckman defeated University, 14-0, in the first round. Laguna Hills plays Irvine, which it beat, 12-0, in the first round, in its regular-season finale on Thursday.
Beckman and Laguna Hills will share the league title assuming both teams win Thursday.
Jasmin Harrell got the complete game victory for the Patriots to improve to 12-2. She allowed three hits, no walks and struck out five. She also went 2 for 3 and scored two runs.
Kindra Bennett gave Beckman a 1-0 lead with an RBI triple in the top of the second, and the Patriots went up 3-0 on Thomas’ two-run shot. Laguna Hills got a run in the bottom of the sixth.

In the Trinity League:
No. 3 Rosary 6, No. 4 Mater Dei 0: Nicole Ortiz’s two-run single in the bottom of the third gave the Royals (20-9, 7-1) a three-run lead and helped them beat the Monarchs (19-6, 5-2) to clinch the league championship at Clark Park.
Orange Lutheran 7, JSerra 5: Kaelynn Greene drove in three runs as the Lancers (15-11, 3-4) rallied from a 5-4 deficit to beat the host Lions (9-15, 0-8).
In the Empire League:
No. 2 Kennedy 4, No. 10 Pacifica 2: Jamia Reid went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs and her twin sister, Elia Reid, belted a two-run homer as the Fighting Irish (25-3, 9-0) swept the season series from the visiting Mariners (18-11, 6-3) to clinch their fifth consecutive league championship.
Valencia 11, Katella 0: Torie Schmidt went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs and Jessica Griffin went 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs to lead the Tigers (15-12, 5-4) past the host Knights (5-18, 0-9).
In the Orange League:
Savanna 6, Western 1: Tanya Dowler allowed four hits, no earned runs, one walk and struck out eight as the Rebels (17-9, 9-0) clinched their fifth consecutive league championship with a victory over the host Pioneers (6-11, 6-3). Brittany Marchant hit a three-run home run in the third and Cynthia Warner went 3 for 3, drove in a run and scored a run to lead Savanna’s offense.
In the Sunset League:
Los Alamitos 4, Newport Harbor 1: Brittany Spalding went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as the Griffins (18-7, 8-1) took care of business against the host Sailors (7-14, 0-8).
No. 8 Esperanza 7, Edison 1: The Aztecs (19-6-2, 8-1) stayed on track for their showdown at Los Alamitos today at 3:15 p.m. for the league championship by beating the visiting Chargers (9-16, 5-4).
In the Century League:
No. 5 Canyon 9, Brea Olinda 2:Freshman Taylor Ousley went 2 for 4 with a solo homer to help the Comanches (22-6, 8-1) defeat the host Wildcats (6-18-1, 2-7).
In the Sea View League:
No. 1 El Toro 13, Foothill 4: Lauren Chamberlain and Christina Capobianco each homered and drove in three runs as the Chargers (22-6-1, 9-0) defeated the visiting Knights (14-14, 3-6) to clinch the league championship.
Northwood 5, No. 9 Trabuco Hills 0: Rita Kim pitched a two-hitter with four walks and six strikeouts as the Timberwolves (16-10, 5-4) knocked off the visiting Mustangs (16-11-1, 7-2).
Huntington Beach 3, Woodbridge 2: Jenny Driver led off the game with a home run for the second straight game as the Oilers (13-13, 2-7) defeated the visiting Warriors (5-23, 1-8) to keep their playoff hopes alive.
In the Freeway League:
La Habra 12, Buena Park 0: Sara Sutherland hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning to help the Highlanders (15-12, 6-3) beat the host Coyotes (1-15, 0-9) via the mercy rule. Melanie Bensema went 2 for 3 with two homers and three RBIs and Kate Sutherland went 2 for 3 with a double, homer and two RBIs.
Sonora 3, Sunny Hills 0: Alexa Limon pitched recorded a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and Ariel Tsuchiyama went 2 for 3 with two runs scored to lift the Raiders (15-11, 6-3) over the visiting Lancers (12-11-1, 5-4).
In the Academy League:
Brethren Christian 12, Whitney (Cerritos) 1: Tori Calhoon went 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs as the Warriors (8-6-1, 5-4) beat the host Wildcats (5-13, 2-7) in five innings because of the mercy rule.
