Los Alamitos remains on track with victory over Marina
Softball roundup: Griffins' 6-3 victory lets them keep pace with Esperanza in Sunset League race.
In this turbulent softball season where no team, no matter how high the ranking, appears to be safe from an upset, Los Alamitos took care of business with a 6-3 victory over Marina in a Sunset League game Tuesday at Marina High.
The Griffins (16-8, 6-1) swept the season series from the Vikings (17-8, 3-4) and, more important, kept pace with No. 8 Esperanza (17-6-2, 6-1) in the race for the league championship.
“The Sunset League is a very, very competitive league,” Griffins coach Ken Fair said. “All the teams can jump up and bite you any day.
“Esperanza is a very fine team, and Marina is an excellent team. But, yeah, we do have a big meeting at the end of the season with Esperanza and right now we both have a loss apiece.”
Los Alamitos still has a game at dangerous Edison on Thursday and at last-place Newport Harbor on May 6 before the regular-season finale against Esperanza on May 8 where the league title will probably be on the line.
It looked like the Vikings would be the first ones on the scoreboard when they had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the first. Marina's Kellie Cuadras laced a shot to right field, but outfielder Alicia Walker scooped up the the ball and threw out Cuadras at first base to end the inning.
Los Alamitos took a 1-0 lead on Chanelle Spalding's RBI single in the top of the second. The Vikings got an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to tie it, 1-1.
The Griffins blew the game open with a four-run sixth inning. Allison Brown had an RBI single to drive in Alicia Walker. With the bases loaded, Spalding delivered a three-run double to push the lead to 5-1.
Los Alamitos added another run in the top of the seventh for a 6-1 advantage. Marina rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh before Griffins ace Taryn Devich got Nicolette Lujan to pop out to first to end the game.
