Rosary's Magdaleno beats pressure, Beckman with clutch double
Softball roundup: Esperanza, El Toro and Kennedy also triumph in league games.
Rosary's Briana Magdaleno didn't feel confident stepping to the plate with two outs in the top of the ninth inning against Beckman ace Jasmin Harrell on Tuesday at Beckman High.
Magdaleno had struck out, popped out to the shortstop and grounded out meekly to Harrell in her first three at-bats.
“I don't do that well under pressure,” Magdaleno said. “I get nervous. I've known their pitcher (Harrell) since I was like 12 (years old). Going up there being 0 for 3, the whole day is frustrating and stressful. I just wanted to do something.”
She did something alright. Magdaleno doubled to left-center field, allowing Caitrin DeBaun, who who had singled, to score the go-ahead run from first base as Rosary defeated the Patriots, 2-1, in a nonleague game.
The Royals had to sweat out a dicey bottom half of the ninth. Beckman's Francine Carranza reached base on an error by the third baseman. Megan Denio hit a grounder to the left side of the infield and Rosary shortstop Alyssa Gonzales got the lead runner out at second.
Denio stole second base and advanced to third on a ground out to second by Trista Thomas. Celene Silva walked to put runners on second and third, but Rosary ace Alex Peyton got Harrell to line out to first to end the game.
Peyton scattered eight hits, walked three and struck out eight to nail down the victory. Harrell gave up five hits, no walks and struck out seven to take the loss.
Rosary avenged a 4-2 loss to Beckman at the Foothill Roundtable Invitational with its fifth consecutive victory, which included triumphs over Mission Viejo and El Modena on Saturday at the Woodbridge/Victory Softball Classic.
“We're bringing it all together, finally,” Rosary coach Nicola Walsh Huerta said. “We've had games where we've had good defense and not the hitting, good pitching and not the good defense. We're actually finally bringing it all together and having it at the same time. Everybody is helping out. Everybody is contributing.”
Peyton staked the Royals to a 1-0 lead with a solo blast to left-center field in the top of the fourth.
Beckman responded in the bottom of the fourth. Allison Kaprielian led off with a double and scored on Katie Heldreth's RBI single.
The Royals upped their record to 15-9, while the Patriots dropped to 13-4.
