Carew Classic fields top softball teams
Softball notebook: State and county powers to take part in this week's tournament.
Canyon co-coaches Lance Eddy and Dan Hay have put together another impressive field of softball teams for this year's Michelle Carew Classic, which runs Wednesday-Saturday at Peralta Park in Anaheim.
Six teams from the latest CalHiSports.com state poll are among the teams entered in the tournament with No. 2 Kennedy, No. 4 Valencia of Valencia, No. 5 Norco, No. 8 Ayala of Chino Hills, No. 13 Canyon and No. 15 El Toro.
Pacifica and Esperanza are some of the other top county teams in the tournament.
Esperanza vs. Vista Murrieta at 3:15 p.m. and El Toro vs. Lakewood at 5:30 p.m. are among the highlighted matchups on Wednesday.
The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Peralta Park.
Prime Ticket will be out at the Michelle Carew Classic on Wednesday and Saturday for its high school sports show, which airs on Thursday nights at 10:30.

The Savanna Tournament concludes on Saturday at Yorba Regional Park. Los Alamitos plays Long Beach Poly in a semifinal game at 6:20 p.m. El Segundo faces Pomona Catholic in the other semifinal at 6:20 p.m. The winners play for the championship at 8:15 p.m. …
The Woodbridge/Victory Softball Classic gets started with pool-play games on Saturday at Bill Barber Park in Irvine. There are some very intriguing matchups on Day 1. Marina takes on El Modena at 8 a.m. The winner of that game has the potential to go all the way and win the whole tournament. Santa Margarita has a pair of tough games against Temescal Canyon at 2:45 p.m. and against Fullerton at 7:15 p.m. …
Fullerton, which has Cal State Fullerton-bound pitcher Katey Laban, has been on top in the Freeway League the past few seasons. Sonora, which has a veteran team and is off to an 8-3 start, could challenge the Indians this season. Sonora plays host to Fullerton in the league opener on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. …
