Foothill recovers from stumble to beat Esperanza
The Knights let a five-run lead get away before scoring in eighth for a 7-6 victory.
Freshman Emily Koerner drove in Taylor Marino with a one-out double in the top of the eighth inning, and Foothill held on to beat Esperanza, 7-6, in a nonleague softball game Wednesday at Esperanza High.
Jaquilyn Edwards, who had five RBIs, belted a three-run homer during a four-run third inning that gave the Knights a 4-1 lead. Foothill added two more runs in the fifth to push its lead to 6-1.
Esperanza rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Foothill improved to 7-5, while the Azrecs dropped to 7-3-1.
In other nonleague games:
Marina 3, El Toro 1: Freshman pitcher Jamie Sullivan tossed a two-hitter and had two hits to lead Marina (9-2) to a 3-1 upset victory over El Toro in a nonleague game at Marina High. El Toro's Kendal Hennings had a hit and a run for the Chargers (8-1).
Canyon 3-7, Valencia 2-1: Kayla Blanco had five hits, including two doubles, and Tayler Van Acker had four hits and four RBIs as the Comanches (9-3) swept the doubleheader against the visiting Tigers (5-4). Freshman Cheyanne Tarango pitched both games for Canyon and struck out 28.
Sonora 3, Diamond Bar 1: Jocelin Whitmore drove in two runs with a triple in the third and Alex Limon had seven strikeouts in four innings to record the victory as the Raiders (7-3) knocked off the visiting Brahmas.
Santa Margarita 5, Fountain Valley 0:Catie Monnahan went 2 for 2 with two doubles and two RBIs and Cassie Monnahan pitched a five-hit shutout as the Eagles (9-2) took care of the visiting Barons (1-11).
Northwood 8, Tustin 0: Kelly Doyle went 3 for 4 with two runs and two doubles, Kelly Bosshart went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, Megan Hom went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI and Kristin Sullivan went 2 for 4 with one run and two RBIs to lead the Timberwolves past the visiting Tillers.
Ocean View 13, Magnolia 0: Nikole Afusia went 3 for 3 with a double, triple, homer and five RBIs as the Seahawks knocked off the host Sentinels.
Los Amigos 11, Buena Park 5: Briana Oropeza went 2 for 2 with two doubles, one RBI and three runs and Genesis Ramos and Marisol Jacobo each drove in two runs to lift the Lobos (2-2-1) over the host Coyotes (1-6).
Anaheim 6, University 5: Melissa Mateos went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs as the Colonists (4-4) held off the host Trojans (2-7).
