Girls soccer: Edison embraces chance to protect its turf
With the help of their boosters, the Chargers have installed a new stadium playing surface.
The Edison girls soccer team had more to be happy about than opening its Sunset League competition with an exciting victory over rival Marina last week.
The Chargers' victory was the first of what they hope to be many great moments on the school's new stadium playing surface.
The field, called Tiger Turf, was developed by Tiger Turf Americas. Tiger Turf is used in 85 countries and has drawn praise as one of the most innovative and durable synthetic surfaces in the sporting world, becoming one of the licensed playing surfaces of the international soccer governing body (FIFA).
Edison booster club president Jeff Burgin, who helped secure the finances needed to install the field, noted the heritage of talented athletes at the school as a big motivation to help the project become a reality.
"For me, the great athletes that this school produces inspired me to help push forward with the project," said Burgin.
Chargers coach Kerry Crooks underscored the importance of playing on a soccer field that accentuates fairness and the genuine abilities of the players.
"Before we got the new surface, it was tough to dribble and get good shots," she said. "This field makes playing soccer here legitimate again."
