Santa Margarita's Bauer steps down
He turned Eagles into a powerhouse that won a CIF-SS title the past three years in a row.
Curt Bauer has resigned as Santa Margarita's boys soccer coach.
Bauer, 42, is leaving the position to spend more time attending his daughters' extracurricular activities at the school. He also said he has accepted a new position to start a new division with his company, increasing his hours per week that he must travel.
Bauer was at the helm 17 years, and during that span turned the Eagles into a county powerhouse, winning the CIF-Southern Section Division I title for the third consecutive time this season. The Eagles went on to win the inaugural CIF Southern California Regional championship.
“What better way to leave then on top, right?” Bauer said Sunday. “And besides, my daughter (Megan Bauer) is going to be a senior. She's a varsity cheerleader and I want to attend her competitions, and I also want to see my daughter Katlyn (Bauer) play soccer.”
Bauer's assistant of five years, Tim Pierce is not likely to take the position, Bauer said.
“When I talked to the school I told them I'd be assisting in the search for a new head coach,” Bauer said.
Bauer started his coaching career at Mater Dei when he was 18, and in his first year there led the Monarchs to their first CIF boys soccer title.
In addition to leading Santa Margarita to eight CIF titles and nine league championships, Bauer also coached players who went on to play Major League Soccer and on the U.S. national team, with New England Revolution keeper Matt Reis being the most notable.
