MISSION VIEJO The St. Margaret's girls lacrosse team trailed in the finals of the Orange County Championships on Wednesday with 11:35 remaining in the first half.

The Tartans then scored the next eight goals and booked their ticket to Friday's Southern Section championship with a 12-7 victory over Los Alamitos in front of 500 at Trabuco Hills High.

The Tartans will represent the South Division and will face Palos Verdes on Friday at 5 p.m. Palos Verdes defeated Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach, 17-13, in the North Division final Wednesday.

“This is a very nice feeling,” St. Margaret's junior Mary-Rachel Walsh said.

Walsh led the Tartans with four goals and received the game ball for her efforts.

Lauren Ciccomascolo had two goals for the Tartans.

This was the third time the two teams have played each other this season. They split the previous two meetings.

The Griffins led, 3-2, after a goal from Shelley Smith. Then the Tartans took over.

“The girls set the pace,” St. Margaret's coach Summer Crabtree said. “From the start they knew that they wanted to play the St. Margaret's game and when we would get it (the ball) on possession we would play at our pace and wait for the good shot and take the good shots.”

Jackie Marloe scored the first of the Tartans' eight consecutive goals with 10:41 left in the first half. Marloe's goal tied the game at 3-3.

The Tartans led, 8-3, at halftime and increased their lead to 10-3 early in the second half. The Tartans led 12-5, before the Griffins scored the final two goals of the game.

The victory afforded St. Margaret's a bit of revenge after losing to Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals last year.

“The key was definitely getting draw control and possess (the ball),” Walsh said. “If they got the ball, we wanted to contain them and let them make a mistake.”

Lindsey Schmidt-Beck led the Griffins with three goals.

FOOTHILL TO FACE PALOS VERDES

Foothill boys lacrosse team will face Palos Verdes in the Southern Section championship Friday at 7 p.m. at Trabuco Hills High. Palos Verdes defeated Oak Park, 8-7, on Wednesday. The Knights defeated St. Margaret's for the Orange County championship last Friday.
