Dana Hills' Schroeder commits to Duke

Dana Hills quarterback Sean Schroeder received an e-mail from Duke on Friday night. He was offered a scholarship Saturday night. He committed Sunday morning.

“I felt like it was the right fit with the academic part and learning under Coach (David) Cutcliffe,” Schroeder said today.

Cutcliffe, who took over the 1-11 Blue Devils program this past December, is noted for mentoring Peyton Manning and Eli Manning while serving as college coaches for both.

“Coach Cutcliffe has put two Manning brothers in the NFL. He was a major reason (I committed),” Schroeder said.

The senior lefty has been one of the county’s most accurate throwers the past two seasons. The two-time All-South Coast League passer had a 66.6 percent completion percentage in 2007. He completed 62.3 percent as a sophomore.

“(Duke) had originally told me they were going to wait until the season and watch a couple games,” Schroeder said. “(The offer) came out the blue. This recruiting process kind of does that sometimes.”

Schroeder said he did not have any other offers. He said a potential big senior season leading to more scholarships would be enticing but that he has made a firm decision.

“That was one of the questions, if there was another school that came along would I change my mind, and the answer was no,” he said. “Duke is where I want to go. I’m looking at the entire scene, not just football.

“This is 100 percent. I don’t think there’s going to be a better offer than Duke.”
