Crean Lutheran hires Meschuk as football coach
The new private school in Irvine won't field varsity team until fall 2011.
Crean Lutheran, a new private school in Irvine, hired Aaron Meschuk as its first football coach.
Meschuk has coached the past two years at St. Michael's Prep, reaching the playoffs in both seasons. St. Michael's Prep finished 5-3 overall in 2007, when it was eliminated by Windward of Los Angeles in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section 8-Man Division I playoffs.
Meschuk played at Whittier Christian and Chapman University. He will be a full-time teacher at Crean, which expects to launch its football program in Fall 2009.
Crean opened in August with freshman and sophomore classes. It is a sister school of Orange Lutheran. Crean was originally called Lutheran South, but changed its name to Crean Lutheran in honor of the late John Crean, a longtime Orange County philanthropist who died last year.
Crean assistant principal Brian Underwood said the school plans to play junior varsity football for at least the first two seasons, with varsity football starting in fall 2011. That means there will be a senior presence on the 2010 team that will not play varsity football.
Underwood said Crean would schedule junior varsity opponents willing to work with the fact Crean has seniors, and Crean might limit how much time those seniors would play in a junior varsity game if that helps Crean find teams to put on its football schedule.
