Panel rejects proposal for playoff divisions

CIF-SS executive committee votes against supporting the move.

ANAHEIMThe Century League's playoff proposal found sympathetic ears at the CIF-SS Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday.

But when the plan reached for a helping hand, that's when the hesitation surfaced.

The committee voted, 16-1, during its meeting at Angel Stadium not to support the league's proposal to form separate playoff divisions for public and private schools.

The proposal is scheduled to be voted on at the CIF-SS Council meeting April 24.

The Executive Committee did give Southern Section commissioner Jim Staunton the green light to form a committee of public and private school representatives to identify issues in the debate and formulate a proposal.

The Century League contends that the playoff split is necessary because private and public schools do not compete on an even playing field. The section has received a legal opinion stating that in a comparison of championships won, there is not an uneven playing field.

The Executive Committee, however, seemed to hear the proposal's battle cry but cautioned that solutions will take more time to develop.

“I think (Brea Olinda principal) Jerry Halpin said it — there is frustration out there and the frustration may move the proposal forward,” Staunton said. “And to me, that would be unfortunate because we always make decisions that are based on rational thought, good grounds and reasons.

“I want to make sure anything that goes forward is based on that as opposed to emotion.”

Halpin is Orange County's area representative on the Executive Committee and the Century League's council representative. He was the odd man out in the 16-1 vote.

Halpin said most Orange County leagues beside the Trinity support the Century League plan. He said after Friday's meeting of county representatives, he would report all the opinions to the Century League. “We'll see at our league meeting Monday what we decide to do,” he said.
