St. Margaret's rolls to 70-20 victory
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - If this is a “glimpse” of what St. Margaret’s will be like the rest of the way, it might be a long Academy League season for its opponents.
The Tartans jumped out to a 21-point lead four minutes into the game and cruised to a 70-20 nonleague victory over visiting Western Christian of Covina on Friday night.
The Tartans head into Academy League play next week, where they will start on the road at Sage Hill, with a 7-0 record. Western Christian fell to 2-5.
St. Margaret’s coach Harry Welch said at times his squad played within itself and showed “glimpses of being a good football team at any level.”
The Tartans scored on their four first-quarter possessions, using just seven plays in the process.
Hunter Steffien rushed for 200 yards in just three quarters and had scoring runs of 19, 44, 4, 31 and 22 yards.
Dan Morrison had first-quarter scoring runs of 14 and 8 yards and also had interception returns of 66 and 38 yards for second-half scores.
St. Margaret’s went up, 35-0, in the second quarter before the Lancers used scoring tosses of 14 and 80 yards from Alex Beaton to Donnie McWhorter to draw within 35-14 at the break.
