Servite marches past St. Paul, 33-0
SANTA FE SPRINGS Johnny McEntee threw two touchdowns and ran for another and D.J. Shoemate scored twice to lead Servite to a 33-0 victory over St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs in a nonleague game Friday night at St. Paul High.
The Friars' defense also came up big as they forced three first-half turnovers and Servite converted them into 20 points.
"After hitting each other for the past three weeks we were ready to bang it out," said Servite coach Troy Thomas.
After an interception by linebacker Dontaie Ferguson on the third play of the game, the Friars marched 50 yards in 10 plays to take a 6-0 lead. Shoemate capped the scoring drive with a one-handed 18-yard TD catch in the end zone on a pass from McEntee.
Early in the second-quarter Michael Loftus kicked a 24-yard field goal to give Servite a 9-0 lead. He added a 39-yarder in the fourth quarter.
Midway through the second quarter the Friars converted a second Swordsmen's turnover and increased its lead to 16-0 on a 36-yard TD pass from McEntee to Andrew Ostergaard.
Later in the quarter after a third St. Paul turnover, McEntee upped the Friars' lead to 23-0 when he scored on a 7-yard run.
The Servite defense, led by Jacob Romero and Matt Kalil, held the Swordsmen to 70 yards of offense in the first half and did not allow St. Paul to complete a pass until the third-quarter.
Greg Portis rushed for 57 yards and caught four passes. Shoemate, who missed most of last season with an ankle injury, also caught four passes.
McEntee completed 11 passes for 188 yards and rushed for 56 yards, including a 33-yard run that led to Servite's second score.
Luis Garcia and Eddie De Rios led the Swordsmen with 60 and 51 yards rushing respectively.
"I like to use the preseason to try a lot of different guys in different positions," said Thomas. "It gets us ready for league play."
