Brea Olinda avoids O.C. teams, but not tough tests

    OCVarsity.com

Brea Olinda has played one of the toughest schedules of any team in the county.

Brea Olinda played in its own tournament, the Ladycat Classic, the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chandler, Ariz., and the West Coast Jamboree in the Bay Area.

The Ladycats have compiled an impressive 16-3 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the Century League to earn the No. 1 spot in the OCVarsity.com county rankings. But they have yet to play a county team in a nonleague game.

They have beaten Central Section powerhouse Hanford, 77-60, and South Torrance, 56-44, in nonleague games.

“Some people think we’re playing nobody,” Brea Olinda coach Jeff Sink said. “It’s because I still shy away from Orange County until the playoffs. I admit I do that. But I don’t do it because I’m dodging competition. I do it because I think you need to see other styles and other games.”

The Ladycats will face a non-Century League team from the county when they take on Christina Marinacci and No. 5 Foothill on Feb. 1 in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High.

    NOTES

    • Sophomore Sara McCutchan of Woodbridge came off the bench to score 35 points and grab 16 rebounds last week in victories over Trabuco Hills and then-No. 8 Huntington Beach. McCutchan was 12 of 13 from the field and 16 of 17 from the free-throw line.

“It was a nice coming out for her,” Warriors coach Eric Bangs said. “She was on JV last year. This is her first year on varsity. She’s just a baby, she’s a colt.” …

    • Edison knocked off Esperanza, 44-36, last week to create a three-way tie for first place in the Sunset League among the Chargers (15-3, 4-1), the Aztecs (11-9, 4-1) and Marina (12-7, 4-1).

Edison will be looking to avenge a 53-51 league-opening loss to the Vikings when it plays at Marina on Thursday.

“We’re looking forward to that game (against Marina),” Edison point guard Priscila Cergol said. “That (league-opening loss) was a shocker. Now, we’re taking it step-by-step and we’re improving as a team and we will win the league championship.”

I was wondering why Brea doesnt show up in OC. I just wish I believed Sink. He is a BS'er.
