Baseball playoffs: Trabuco Hills continues its charge
Check out how the Mustangs overpowered Orange, 12-1, plus the updated pairings.
After its first eight games this season, Trabuco Hills was 2-6. The Mustangs scored only one run in two of those six losses and were shut out in three of them.
Things have changed. Continuing a recent trend, Trabuco Hills beat Orange, 12-1, Friday in a Southern Section Division II first-round game at Orange.
The Mustangs have won four of their past five games and have averaged nine runs in those four victories.
“This was nice to see,” Trabuco Hills coach Michael Burns said. “We had some problems scoring runs early in this season.”
Trabuco Hills (15-13), the No.2 team from the Sea View League, will play fourth-seeded Palos Verdes (26-5) in the second round Tuesday at Trabuco Hills.
Orange, the No. 1 team from the Golden West League, finished 17-10. The other two Golden West League playoff teams have been eliminated, too — Westminster lost to Burroughs of Burbank in the wild-card round Tuesday, and Ocean View lost to El Toro, 12-3, in the first round Friday.
Ryan Wagner was 3 for 3 with four RBIs for the Mustangs, who compiled 19 hits. Mike Sianez pitched a complete game three-hitter.
The Mustangs got on top quickly Friday, with some help from Orange. They scored an unearned run in the first inning and another in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
Wagner and Devon Baughman had RBI singles in the third and another unearned run pushed Trabuco's lead to 5-0.
Trabuco scored five in the fourth to make it 10-0. Wagner had a three-run double, and John O'dea and Tyler Roth added RBI singles. In the sixth, Mario Caporuscio's triple and Sean Menchaca's single drove in runs, and it was 12-0. Orange scored in the sixth when Gavin Stoecker scored on a fielder's choice.
Coaches always find room for improvement no matter a game's outcome, and Burns did not have to look hard. Trabuco Hills made five errors Friday.
“We have a lot to work on before our next game,” Burns said.
