OCVarsity Voice: From Cole to poll, it's nothin' but good stuff
Damian Calhoun points out what's good, including his own analysis, in the county this week.
To borrow a line from Kanye West “Welcome to the Good Life.”
Or at least what’s good about the high school sports scene this week in Orange County.
First up, if you haven’t watched Orange Lutheran senior Gerrit Cole pitch, please do so. NOW!
Cole has signed with UCLA, but I have a hunch, that he will not become a Bruin. I don’t think there is anything wrong with being a Bruin, but Cole is rated as a top draft prospect in the June Amateur Draft and if the money is right, he will sign and head to the minors.
By the way, Cole struck out 11 and allowed three hits in a 4-1 victory over Mater Dei on Wednesday night. I need him on my fantasy team.
• Next, if you haven’t read Carlos Arias’ OCVarsity Voice from Tuesday, you’re missing out. Unbelievable. (Click here to read the story.)
You can see for yourself what happens when assignments collide.
• Savanna's softball team won its 40th consecutive Orange League game last week. The Rebels haven’t lost a league contest since April 29, 2004! You want more? Savanna has won 26 of the 40 games by shutout and 27 by mercy rule! Congrats to the Rebels. I once played on a Register softball team that probably would have been one of the shutout victims.
• Lacrosse anybody? I spent Wednesday watching two lacrosse games/matches in the semifinals of the O.C. Championships. Foothill defeated JSerra and St. Margaret’s took care of Corona del Mar.
That’s right, TWO.
• More lacrosse. I haven’t been around the beat for long, but allow me to offer some congrats to the Aliso Niguel girls and Laguna Hills boys teams. The Lady Wolverines, a first-year program, advanced to the girls O.C. playoffs, which begin Friday. The Hawks went 2-14 last year. This year the Hawks went 12-7.
• Who’s laughing now? Here is my preseason top 4 from my boys volleyball preview: 1. Newport Harbor; 2. CdM; 3. Santa Margarita; 4. Woodbridge. Now the top four in the county as of April 28: 1. Newport Harbor; 2. CdM; 3. Santa Margarita; 4. Woodbridge. ... I win.
That’s enough for this week. I’ll be back whenever my editor sends out the signup sheet.
I’m not afraid, unlike some people.
