Edison rallies this time to beat Esperanza, 6-5
The Chargers overcome five-run deficit to pull out victory, stay tied for second in Sunset League.
It wasn't the first time Edison had trailed Esperanza by five runs, so in an effort to keep his young team upbeat, Chargers coach Steve Lambright spun this as opportunity.
“I told the kids that we haven't been able to battle back against a team of that caliber all year. ‘Now, you have that chance,'” Lambright said, as his team went up to bat Wednesday in the bottom of the third inning.
Three batters later, Kyle Higashioka bashed the Chargers back into the game with his sixth home run of the season, matching Gary Apelian's three-run home run from the top of the third.
After tying the score in the fourth, Edison did not take its first lead until Nick Torres' slipped the winning single through the left side with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Edison won, 6-5, at home after losing to the Aztecs, 5-0, earlier in April.
Edison (11-14, 7-5) remained tied with Fountain Valley for second place in the Sunset League, while Esperanza (13-10, 6-6) fell one game back with three to play.
The Aztecs and Chargers play again Friday at Esperanza, with aces Kurt Heyer — who got the victory in relief Wednesday — and Jon Pettibone facing off.
Edison can clinch one of the league's three playoff berths with a victory as Los Alamitos closes in on the league title.
