Foothill wins game with better comeback

Knights edge Trabuco Hills, 3-2, in game where all of the runs are scored in seventh.

SANTA ANA By the seventh inning, the sensational had become ordinary, the bizarre no longer surprising.

After Trabuco Hills scored the game's first two runs in the top of the seventh inning, it seemed fitting that Foothill should win it, 3-2, with three in the bottom of the inning.

The Knights, who put a runner at second with no outs in the previous three innings, did not cash in until Ben Douglas stroked a two-out, two-strike, bases-loaded single to left field to tie the score.

Corey Schultze grounded the next pitch through the left side off starter Tyler Roth for the winning run.

Foothill (14-8, 7-4) moved into a second-place tie in the Sea View League, defeating Trabuco Hills (11-12, 7-4) for the first time in three tries.

With four games to play, Huntington Beach sits a game back of second place, and El Toro is two up in first. Just three teams reach the postseason.

“Each win counts as much as a CIF game right now,” Douglas said.

Senior right-hander Aaron Lambrix got the victory for Foothill, striking out five. He had help from Schultze, who made a diving catch to start a double play in the fifth, and left-fielder Eduardo Diaz, who threw out Mustangs catcher John O'Dea at the plate to end the sixth.

O'Dea was ejected for arguing the call.

Trabuco Hills performed a nifty trick of its own when Devon Baughman dropped a sixth-inning fly ball in shallow left field but promptly threw to third to start a double play.

The Mustangs were not as fortunate in the seventh inning, failing to record an out after catching a pair of Foothill runners off second and third following an error.

“We've actually seen a lot of bizarre stuff this year,” Foothill coach Gary Fishel said. “I think that's why our kids were pretty resilient.”
