It was a roller coaster, a see-saw or whatever amusement park or playground metaphor fits an up-and-down, back-and-forth game.Aliso Niguel took an early lead, fell behind by five runs, cut its deficit to one, fell behind by two and then scored three runs in the fifth inning to beat Tesoro, 9-8, in a South Coast League baseball game Friday at Aliso Niguel.
The Wolverines' victory lifted them into a tie for first place with Tesoro. Both are 8-3 in league.
If they are tied for first in the final standings, Tesoro would be the league's No. 1 playoff representative because Tesoro won two of its three games against Aliso Niguel.
Consecutive singles in the fifth inning by Jordan Helmkamp, Mike Chapman, Riley Pitts and Stefan Sabol, and a Tesoro infield throwing error produced the fifth-inning runs that changed an 8-6 Titans advantage into the final 9-8 lead for Aliso Niguel.
“That's baseball,” Aliso senior shortstop Zach Luther said. “You never know what's going to happen.”
Luther, who wears No. 11 like his father, former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ed Luther, had three hits and an RBI.
Mike Nadel homered and drove in two runs, Pitts had two hits and a fifth-inning RBI, and Sabol had two hits and another of the fifth-inning RBIs.
Brian Carcerano pitched the final five innings to get the victory. He also had an RBI single in the fourth.
Tesoro got a two-run homer from Mike Allen in the second inning. Gabe Soria had three hits and scored twice, Anthony Hutting and Austin O'Neal both had two hits and an RBI, and Ben Mount hit an RBI double.
Aliso Niguel, ranked No. 5 in Orange County, is 17-6 overall.
The Wolverines play San Clemente twice next week and Capistrano Valley twice the following week, the final week of the regular season.
