Reigning Register boys swimmer of the year Grant Shoults has committed to Stanford, the Santa Margarita senior-to-be announced Saturday.

“It’s been an exciting process learning about some of the top swimming programs across the country and getting to know some of the best coaches and swimmers in the world,” the Mission Viejo Nadadores club standout wrote in a text message.

“Stanford has all the attributes I was seeking for my swimming career, education and future.”

Shoults earned the Register’s top swimming award this past spring after capturing the 500-yard freestyle at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals in a county-record 4 minutes, 15.56 seconds and claiming the 200 freestyle in a national private high school record 1:34.54.

Shoults is the first Santa Margarita swimmer to commit to Stanford. He plans to major in human biology.

He used his announcement to thank those who have helped him.

“I’m especially grateful to my family and the coaches, teachers, administrators, teammates as well as this community that has supported me. I will take all that with me and ‘represent the O.C.’ as I head north to The Farm a year from now.”

Shoults’ top meet of the summer is the U.S. senior nationals in San Antonio, Aug. 6-10. He has qualified in multiple events for next summer’s U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.
