Anaheim police are investigating an alleged assault of a Servite water polo player during a match against Mater Dei on Monday night at Servite, said Sgt. Rick Martinez, a spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department.

Servite principal Michael Brennan reported the alleged assault to the police department, Martinez said.

Brennan and Servite athletic director Alan Clinton have not returned messages this week from The Register regarding the alleged incident.

Anaheim police have interviewed the Servite player, Martinez said Thursday. The Servite player alleged that he was choked twice during a match against Mater Dei, Martinez said.

The alleged incident occurred during a match between Servite's varsity and a Mater Dei B team Monday night during the Hank Vellekamp No. 1 Tournament at Servite.

In the first alleged incident, the Servite player alleged that he was grabbed by the throat during the match and felt like he was being choked, Martinez said.

The Servite player left the match but returned to the game and alleged that he was pulled under water and choked again, Martinez said.

The Servite player wasn't sure which player or players from Mater Dei allegedly grabbed him and choked him, Martinez said. The Servite player told police that he was taken to the hospital but Martinez said police aren't sure of the extent of the player's injuries.

Mater Dei president Patrick Murphy didn't immediately return messages Thursday.

The CIF-Southern Section didn't receive an ejection report from the match, section spokesman Thom Simmons said Thursday. Ejection reports include information about game misconduct ejections. The section received an incident report from the match but the section doesn't share that information, Simmons said.

“Everything is at the school level right now,” Simmons said. “Without an ejection … there is nothing we can do.”

Servite and Mater Dei are scheduled to play their Trinity League match Oct. 27 at Mater Dei.
