WEDNESDAY’S CIF-SS GIRLS WATER POLO SEMIFINALS

DIVISION I

CORONA DEL MAR (23-6) VS. LAGUNA BEACH (29-0)

Site, time: William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The top-seeded and defending champion Breakers enter riding an Orange County-record 50-match winning streak. They have only played the Sea Queens once, handing them a 9-3 loss in the semifinals of the Santa Barbara TOC in mid-January. The teams’ clash brings arguably the county’s top-two players into the same competition pool in Laguna Beach senior Makenzie Fischer and Corona del Mar junior Maddie Musselman. Both are U.S. national team players and they haven’t seemed to shy away from each other during games.

In January, they engaged each other aggressively and both made plays against the other. But as Fischer and Musselman dueled, Fischer’s sister, Aria, netted a game-high four goals. The Fischer sisters have combined for 215 goals to pace a high-powered attack but the Breakers’ defense can be equally as tough. Holly Parker anchors the unit from goal. Corona del Mar played arguably its best game in an 11-8 victory against Orange Lutheran in the quarterfinals. Musselman, Eliza Britt and goalie Heidi Ritner delivered strong performances but the Lancers had no answer for the re-emergence of Cal-bound senior Grace Morgan. CdM’s offense will need all its firepower against the best defense in the division. And the Sea Queens will need plenty of defense for the Fischers.
