Mater Dei is state school of the year as selected by CalHiSports.com.

It is the second straight year as state school of the year for Mater Dei. The school also was awarded the honor in the 1996-97, 1994-95 and 1991-92 school years.

CalHiSports had eight Mater Dei teams among the top 10 teams in various sports. The Monarchs were state champions in boys basketball and boys track and field.

Mater Dei teams advanced to CIF-Southern Section finals in boys and girls water polo, girls basketball, girls volleyball and football.

Honorable mentions went to Mission Viejo in the Division 1 category, Laguna Beach in Division 3 and St. Margaret’s in Division 5.

Santa Margarita was named a “school of distinction.” The Eagles won six CIF-SS team championships, the most of any school in the section.
