Justin Schaeffer is the new football coach at Fountain Valley.

Schaeffer has been Murrieta Mesa’s only football head coach since the school opened in 2009.

The Murrieta Valley Unified School District announced today that Schaeffer is leaving Murrieta Mesa to take the Fountain Valley job.

At Fountain Valley he replaces Ray Fenton, who resigned there earlier this year to take the football coaching position at Los Alamitos, where Fenton succeeds all-time Orange County football victories leader John Barnes.

Murrieta Mesa was 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the Southwestern League in 2015. It was the first time the Rams had won more than one league game.

Schaeffer’s career overall record at Murrieta Mesa is 26-34. Murrieta Mesa is 3-27 in the Southwestern League in its six seasons of varsity football.

The Southwestern League is a CIF-Southern Section West Valley Division league that includes ’15 division finalist Vista Murrieta. The West Valley Division equals what previously would have been called Division 2. The Pac-5 Division is what would have been called Division 1.

Schaeffer was a three-sport athlete at Hilltop of Chula Vista. He played cornerback at Southwestern College. Schaeffer later coached at Southwestern where he was defensive coordinator until taking the Murrieta Mesa job.

Fountain Valley was 7-4 overall last season in which the Barons finished second in the Sunset League with a 4-1 league record. They lost to the Southwestern League’s Murrieta Valley, 48-7, in the West Valley first round.
