Swimmer Grant Shoults of Santa Margarita and the Mission Viejo Nadadores is on fire at the FINA World Junior Championships in Singapore.

The reigning Register swimmer of the year led off the Americans’ 800-meter freestyle relay Friday with a lifetime-best time of 1 minute, 48.10 seconds, sending the team to the gold medal and world junior record time of 7:13.76.

He teamed with fellow California high school swimmer Maxime Rooney, Sean Grieshop and Grant House.

Shoults’ time was faster than his silver-medal performance Wednesday in the 200 free when he clocked a 1:48.42 in touching second to Rooney (1:47.78). Rooney of Maxime Rooney of Granada in Livermore jumped to the No. 3-ranked American in the 200 while Shoults moves to 12th.

On Tuesday, Shoults struck gold in the 400 free with a lifetime-best time 3:48.81. After that race, he sent a comment to OCVarsity via text:

“I have never felt this good going into any meet before,” the Stanford-bound senior wrote. “I was able to enter the race with confidence knowing that I would be able to put together a good race.”

Shoults said the meet’s atmosphere has been exciting.

“By wearing the USA cap and swimming at amazing venue with cameras everywhere, the adrenaline took care of the first 100 for me (in the 400),” he added.
