Former El Toro water polo standout Nick Rascon, who has played the past two seasons at Long Beach State, has transferred to Cal, he confirmed late Wednesday night.

The U.S. junior national team attacker said he will start school at Cal in the second semester, which begins later this month.

He said he transferred to grow as a water polo player and person and to get a "better chance to win a NCAA title."

Long Beach State finished 1-7 in the MPSF last season, missing the postseason tournament. Cal finished second in the regular season and third at the MPSF tournament.

Rascon will be eligible to play next season despite his transfer. "(Long Beach State coach) Gavin Arroyo released me to play, so I can play my junior year," Rascon said. "He's a real special person. We have a close relationship."

Rascon was the 49ers' second-leading scorer last season with 32 goals. When he signed with Long Beach State, he was one of the biggest-name recruits to land with the 49ers in recent memory.

Cal recently landed a commitment from Newport Harbor All-County attacker Farrel South, a senior.

Rascon's sister, Shelby, plays water polo at El Toro. She's a sophomore.
