Mater Dei junior Issei Tanabe and Dana Hills senior Tanner Podres both made the cut at their respective local U.S. Open qualifying tournaments and have earned a spot in the northern California sectional, which will help set the field for the major championship, early next month.
Tanabe, who helped Mater Dei win the CIF-SS Western Team Divisional on Monday, shot a 2-under-par 70 at Ironwood Country Club to tie for first while Podres shot an even-par 71 in the Eisenhower Course at Industry Hills to place fifth.
The top five players in each tournament advanced.
