Santa Margarita’s No. 7-ranked girls water polo team secured third place in the Trinity League by outlasting Rosary, 8-7, in sudden-death overtime Tuesday night at Savanna.

Junior Christina Doherty scored off a foul from 5 meters in the first sudden-death overtime to help the Eagles avoid the upset. Junior goalie Lauren Tapia made 18 saves for the Royals.

Rosary, potentially an intriguing team in Division 2, fell to 12-14 overall and won’t be eligible for an at-large entry to the playoffs because it doesn’t have a .500 record.

In a stretch against solid, playoff-bound teams, Rosary has dropped seven straight games. Two of the losses were by one goal while two others were by two goals.
