The U.S. women’s water polo team qualified for this summer’s Olympics in Rio by defeating France, 19-0, in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gouda, Netherlands on Saturday.
Former Register player of the year Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach) scored six goals while goals Ashleigh Johnson and Sami Hill combined for eight saves for the reigning Olympic and World champion.
Fischer’s sister, Aria, added three goals while Maddie Musselman of Newport Beach, Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor) and Courtney Mathewson (Canyon) each added one. The U.S. squad also features former Register player of the year Rachel Fattal (Los Alamitos).
