Newport Harbor shuts down boys basketball

Because of what Newport Harbor principal Michael Vossen described as "criminal threats" made toward Newport Harbor boys basketball coach Larry Hirst and Hirst's wife, the school has suspended its boys basketball program.

Hirst took a leave of absence in January. He did not say what that was about at the time -- "Some day, we'll sit down and I'll let you know what's going on," Hirst told me then.

This is bad stuff. Crazy-bad stuff. Hirst is one of the nicest, most-balanced guys coaching in Orange County high school sports.

Here is a story with details, from the Daily Pilot which does a great job covering the Newport Beach-Costa Mesa community.
