Northwood football coach Rick Curtis said Saturday that his father, John Curtis, passed away Thursday after a lengthy illness at the age of 80.

Curtis coached the Timberwolves later that evening in a 28-7 Pacific Coast League victory over University.

Curtis made no mention of the death of his father, who had been hospitalized for months on Thursday, but on Saturday, he said in an email to the Orange County Register:

“My dad John Curtis, passed away on Thursday afternoon at 2:20 p.m. after months of pain and suffering. The family decided that it would be best that I attend our game on Thursday night, despite our sadness.

“It would be where John Curtis would want his son and his grandson (Sean) to be. My sister also attended her son's final game as a senior at Santiago HS (Corona) where he caused two fumbles, recovered a fumble and was in on multiple tackles during his final game."

Sean Curtis, a former Northwood player, is an assistant coach with his father at Northwood.

Curtis also attended the Irvine-Woodbridge game on Friday night. Irvine and Woodbridge wound up in a 34-34 tie and after the game, Curtis and his players received the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy.

Curtis said services for his father will be held on Nov. 28 at the Riverside Community Center, 4000 Pierce St., Riverside, located in the city where he lived.

Northwood, the No. 2 team from the PCL, will host Savanna Friday at 7 p.m. at Irvine in the opening round of the CIF-Southern Division playoffs.
