Brethren Christian’s football team, ranked first in CIF-SS Division 10, has forfeited its season-opening victory against Ocean View because of an ineligible player, the Southern Section and Brethren Christian said Tuesday.
The section first said Brethren Christian (2-1) forfeited all three of its victories but later corrected its statement that the Warriors will forfeit one game.
Brethren Christian self-reported the violation, involving a transfer student who didn’t play football at his previous school, to the Southern Section last week, said Stacey Whitmire, Brethren Christian’s new athletic director.
“It’s an unfortunate situation but we want to do the right thing (and self-reported),” Whitmire said.
The Warriors opened their season with a 15-7 victory against Ocean View on Aug. 26.
Brethren Christian, an East Valley semifinalist last season, is playing a freelance schedule because of the breakup of the Academy League in football. The Warriors will need to apply for an at-large berth to the playoffs.
“We’re grateful it’s just one (forfeit),” Brethren Christian coach Pat McInally said. “We have to play good football.”
The Warriors play at Capistrano Valley Christian (2-1) and first-year coach Rick Curtis on Friday. They also have upcoming games against St. Margaret’s (3-0), Crean Lutheran (2-1) and Rancho Christian (2-0) and Coach Jim Kunau.
Brethren Christian impressed during the summer, capturing passing tournaments at Paloma Valley and Yorba Linda.
