The North Orange County All-Stars, coached by Fullerton’s Gus Martinez and Ed De Avila, began preparations for the 55th edition of the Brea Lions Orange County North-South All-Star Football Game, which will be played on July 10, on Tuesday.

The team, which is headlined by Indians quarterback Scott Lloyd and Villa Park’s Louis Vecchio, went through a simple install day on the first day.

“It was everything I was hoping it’d be,” Martinez said. “Good size, more impressive was the team speed.”

Martinez was pleased with the size he was able to work with on the offensive line, but typical of a first day of practice, the defense had the upper hand as the offense was still learning the scheme.

Most impressive was the defensive line. Martinez pointed out Canyon’s Cameron Henry as a member of the front four who impressed, but during the team drills, Servite’s Adam O’Shea played well against the run.

It was a good day overall for the North defense.

“Fast, man. Fast and strong,” Martinez said of his defense. “The front four looked great, I think we’re going to be OK on defense.”

On the offensive side of the ball, a pair of receivers — Servite’s Neil Pauu and Los Alamitos’ Dashawn Gordon — looked impressive during practice.
