The high school swim season is young but that didn’t stop Capistrano Valley’s Nick Norman from throwing down times Thursday worthy of the championship season.

The senior out of the Mission Viejo Nadadores club blazed to victory in the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 23.76 seconds to help highlight a double dual-meet against visiting Loyola and Corona del Mar.

How fast is 4:23.76?

Norman won the CIF Division 1 title last May in 4:23.02, which ranks 15th in county history. The county record is a 4:16.93 by Larsen Jensen for Mission Viejo in 2003.

The Cal-bound Norman also won the 200 free on Thursday in 1:38.68, which was faster than his times at CIF last season. He finished 11th in the 200 last May but a 1:38.68 would have jumped him to fifth.

If Thursday marked a starting point for Norman’s intentions for May, or even a trial run, watch out. He likely train hard with the Nadadores in April before he potentially get a rest for mid-May.
