First, the good news.

University’s Corey Okubo helped highlight League Finals Friday in Orange County by slicing two-tenths of a second off his 2013 Orange County record in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 1 minute, 46.87 seconds at the Pacific Coast League meet at Woollett.

Okubo’s time also positions him well to go after the CIF Division 1 record next week in the 200 IM. The standard of 1:46.96 was set by Trevor Hoyt in 2009.

The Southern California Swimming record for 17-18s is a quick 1:44.10 by Nolan Koon in 2009.

Okubo’s best this year is short-course season is a 1:46.62 in December, which ranks him 10th in the nation for 18-year-old boys. A 1:45 would place the Princeton-bound senior in the class with some his national junior-level rivals.

And now for the police blotter.

Newport Beach police responded to the Sunset League swim finals at Newport Harbor earlier this evening after an altercation between a high school male and high school female and detained the male on suspicion of battery, Sgt. Brian Haas of the Newport Beach PD said late Friday night.

The female suffered a minor abrasion to her forehead and the male was later released, Haas said. The police department will be investigating the incident, Haas said.

More info. to come.
