Long Beach Wilson has selected Los Alamitos’ Jeff Nesmith as its boys water polo coach, replacing Tony Martinho, Nesmith confirmed Friday.

Nesmith, 33, coached the Griffins for one season and was the school’s boys swim coach but now returns to his alma mater.

“It really is a dream of mine to be back there,” Nesmith said of taking over the storied Bruins program.

His grandmother, Sally, was part of the school’s first graduating class in 1929. His father, Jim, and sister, Katie, also graduated from Wilson.

Nesmith had been a substitute teacher at Los Alamitos but will now substitute at Long Beach Wilson in the hopes of landing a teaching position.

In 2013, Nesmith replaced Dave Carlson at Los Alamitos and guided the Griffins to a third place finish in the Sunset League. Los Al lost in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs to Loyola, 13-8.
