Ed Drzanek resigned today as varsity football head coach at El Modena.

He will remain at El Modena as athletic director and will become freshman football head coach.

Replacing him is Matt Mitchell, and El Modena alumnus who has been El Modena offensive coordinator and assistant head coach the past three seasons. Mitchell had a previous assistan coaching stint at El Modena and also has been an assistant at Servite and at Orange Coast College.

“I’m really excited that Matt’s taking over,” Drzanek said. “I think he’ll do an incredible job.”

Drzanek, 55, became El Modena head coach in 2010. The Vanguards finished 2-8 that year. In 2015, El Modena finished 8-5 and reached the CIF-Southern Section Southern Division semifinals for the second season in a row.
