Santa Margarita’s Kaitlyn Merritt won the girls pole vault competition at the Arcadia Invitational again this past weekend.

Merritt cleared 13 feet, six inches after setting a county and meet record at Arcadia last season.

Although Merritt won the event, which is an accomplishment in itself, she narrowly fell short of clearing 14-1.25 after clearing 13-6.

In an intrasquad meet on Wednesday, Merritt finally got over her personal hurdle of 14 feet.

The mark, after measurement, turned out to be 14.75.

“It’s super rewarding,” Merritt said. “Arcadia built way more confidence (for me).”

There appears to be some confusion if the mark will actually count as an official record.

Eagles coach Gil Garcia said there was an official on hand, who officiated the pole vault, and the official belives that the mark should stand.

There has been no official confirmation as of now, though, so the status of the mark is up in the air. The Santa Margarita boys were hosting a track meet with St. John Bosco.

If the feat doesn’t count, Merritt said she will go for it again at the Orange County Championships, which are on April 16. If it does count, Merritt, who cleared 13-9, a county record, earlier this month, will become the first girl in county history to ever clear 14 feet.

Merritt also said she has her sights on 14-4, which would be a national record.
