Before the track and field season started, Kaitlyn Merritt wasn’t quite sure how she was going to follow up on her historic sophomore season.

Merritt set a national sophomore record in the pole vault by clearing 13-feet, 8-inches last year, which was also the county record.

On Thursday against Orange Lutheran, Merritt answered those who were wondering what she’d do for an encore.

Merritt set a new persnal and school record with a clearance of 13-9. The mark is also the best in California and bests her previous county record.

The month of April is when some track and field athletes start hitting their stride, so it’s possible — or likely– Merritt will set even more records this season.
