Mater Dei left-hander and U.S. national team player Thomas Dunstan has committed to USC, Monarchs boys water polo coach Chris Segesman said Monday night.

Dunstan picked the Trojans over defending NCAA champion UCLA but wrestled with the decision. Dunstan didn’t announce his intention last week on National Signing Day.

“He needed the extra time,” Segesman said. “He wanted to make sure it was the right decision. … He has a ton of respect for both programs.”

The senior, who transferred from Connecticut for the 2015 season, helped Mater Dei claim the CIF Division 1 crown in the fall, ending the two-run reign of Harvard-Westlake of Studio City.

The first-team All-County selection and Harvard center Ben Hallock, who also plays for the national team, are arguably the top-two water recruits in the nation in the class of 2016. Dunstan is a strong defender and skilled attacker.

He will join Mater Dei teammate Luke Wyatt, a left-handed attacker, at USC.
