The South Coast boys water polo tournament is underway, so it's time to check on another Mater Dei streak.

The Monarchs are seeking to capture the traditionally-tough, 32-team tournament for a fourth consecutive season.

Mater Dei, the top seed, defeated Newport Harbor in the finals in 2012 (7-4) and 2011 (16-7) and edged El Toro, 11-10, in the 2010 final.

In 2009, Mater Dei fell to goalie Garrett Danner (now at UCLA) and El Toro, 9-3, in the semifinals. The Monarchs finished a fourth in a tournament ultimately claimed by Loyola of Los Angeles.

Will it Mater Dei encounter Newport yet again? Will the Monarchs' extend another South Coast streak? Those are just two of the questions to be answered the next three days.
