Final score: St. John Bosco 62, Santa Margarita 14

The game: St. John Bosco opened Trinity League play with a big 62-14 victory over third-ranked Santa Margarita, Friday night. Santa Margarita led 14-7 after the first quarter, but St. John Bosco, behind the play of quarterback Quentin Davis scored 55 consecutive points to reach the 60-point mark for the fourth time this season.

Keys to the game: There were a couple. First, late in the first half Santa Margarita quarterback KJ Costello went down with an ankle injury. He was replaced by Richard Wagner for the final play of the first half. The Eagles offense was never the same. Costello came out to start the second half, but you could tell he wasn’t moving well. The Bosco defense definitely saw it and started bringing the heat, knocking Costello around and eventually out of the game.

Second, after allowing three consecutive touchdowns to end the first half, it became clear that the first possession in the second half would prove critical. St. John Bosco led 28-14. The Eagles needed to get a stop to stay alive in the game. It didn’t happen. On a 3rd and 8 from the 22, Davis connected with Devin Fleming who went 78 yards for the touchdown that put the game away.

Player of the game: Quentin Davis. The senior quarterback entered the season with big shoes to fill, replacing Josh Rosen, who is now at UCLA. Friday night, he again showed that he’s the man for the job. Davis completed 14 of 18 passes for 386 yards with four touchdowns and he also rushed for a touchdown. “I’m extremely proud of him,” Bosco coach Jason Negro said. “He’s put in a lot of work and preparation to get to this point. He sat behind Josh for three years and when his number was called, he’s been able to come out here and shine.”

Key stat: Santa Margarita needed to run the ball to try and keep the St. John Bosco offense off of the field. That didn’t happen. The Eagles were never able to get going on the ground. Trey Green led the Eagles with 15 yards on 13 carries.

They said it:  “We know we have a target on our chest and we’re going to get everybody’s best effort, so we had to withstand that, keep our composure and understand that it is a 48 minute game.” – St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro.

What it means: The big question entering Trinity League is can anyone  slow down this high-powered St. John Bosco offensive unit? Next up is Mater Dei, who boasts a strong running game with Brandon La Marche that could control the clock and keep Davis and the offense off the field. You will need to control the clock and down and distance and as of right now, that might be enough. Time will tell, however.

For Santa Margarita, the Eagles will need to forget about this one quickly. The Eagles will face JSerra (0-1) next week.  “We know that this league is tough and physical,” Santa Margarita coach Rick Curtis said. “We had some injuries and we will have to bounce back, but our kids will be ready to go. We’re going to stick together. We’ll be fine.”
