Santa Margarita Eagle Invitational

Where, when: Santa Margarita High, Saturday, Feb. 28, 8 a.m.

Overview: The track and field season starts Saturday in Orange County with the Santa Margarita Eagle Invitational. The throws field headlines the boys’ side of the meet which features Mater Dei’s Malik McMorris and St. John Bosco’s Matt Katnik, considered one of the top shot putters in the nation. Last year, McMorris was third nationally in the discus. On the girls side, Santa Margarita pole vaulter Kaitlyn Merritt, who has signed with Stanford, will be an athlete to watch today. Katherine Gallaher and Shannon MacKellar of Esperanza should represent well in the distance running events. This year, Santa Margarita will donate all proceeds from the meet to the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organization that helps troops injured in combat get their lives back on track. “I think our armed forces are the backbone of this country, and we owe them so much more than they get for sacrificing their lives to protect our freedom,” Santa Margarita coach Sean Zeitler said. “My brother is a Marine and I have several relatives that have served our country. This was really the smallest of things we could do, and I am just happy the Wounded Warrior Project wanted to partner with us.”
