Crean Lutheran’s aquatics program will take another major step today when the Saints play their first water polo match.

Crean Lutheran’s boys team will take on Corona del Mar JV at the varsity Weisz Cup today at El Dorado at 5 p.m.

“First game ever … and it’s CdM,” Crean Lutheran coach Craig Brown said with a laugh Thursday.

Brown said the Saints received the go-ahead for their maiden water polo adventure in July, so they didn’t practice during the summer. But the school does feature a 13-player roster. Crean Lutheran also has been practicing at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Educational Center.

The Saints also are playing in two JV tournaments (El Rancho, Don Lugo)  and varsity matches against Artesia, San Juan Hills, Sage Hill and Diamond Bar in a freelance schedule.

“(We’re) a total start-up,” Brown said.

The school has quickly emerged as an Orange County swimming powerhouse. Under Brown guidance, Crean Lutheran’s girls have captured consecutive CIF-SS Division 3 swim titles and will compete in Division 2 this spring. The Saints’ girls also currently hold four county swimming records.
