Orange County football lost two legendary coaches last season with the retirement of John Barnes at Los Alamitos and Mike Marrujo at Valencia.
The county will lose another well-known coach later this year with Dave White‘s retirement at Edison.
But one legend is sticking around … in a limited basis.
Respected Los Alamitos defensive coordinator Barry Sher, who formed a longtime duo with Barnes at Los Alamitos, is serving as a consultant at Kennedy.
The connection at Kennedy makes sense for the popular Sher.

In the spring, Sean Clark and a group of more than 100 ex-Los Alamitos players honored Sher for his Griffins’ career. White also attended the event and in a speech called Sher the best defensive coordinator he has faced in his long career.
Sher doesn’t regularly attend Kennedy practices but plans to be in the coaches booth Thursday night when the Fighting Irish (1-1) play host to El Modena (1-0) at Western.
“I just sit back and second guess,” he joked.
Sher believes Kennedy has a promising young coaching staff, which includes offensive coordinator Dan Urbanos and former Kennedy star Garrett Sabol.
“They have a lot of real good young coaches,” he said. “A lot of times, they teach me stuff.”
Sher also is high on Kennedy’s offensive line.
